Job Description –

DB2 Data Engineer - long term contract 12-24 months :

The skillsets in bold is required.

Required skills:

·         Develop and maintain various database applications on the IBM iSeries platform, utilizing dynamic SQL, temporary and temporal tables, convert RPG code to SQL stored procedures, commitment control, procedures, table functions, UDFs, performance tuning, logging and exception handling.

·         Expert SQL stored procedures development experience in db2 IBM iSeries platform. Please note that  this is a MUST. If a candidate just has embedded SQL and RPG experience, Client will not move them to an interview.

·         Able to read RPGIV, RPGLE, RPGFree programs, embedded SQL

·         + Conversion/modernization experience from RPG to SQL stored procedures in db2

·         IBM tools such as Aldon, RDI, Client etc.

·         + Application development experience interacting with front end using REST APIs, Json, XML

·         + exposure to python, microservices, VS code IDE development.

·          

Questions to screen DB2 candidates. 

1.Can you describe a time when you implemented business logic directly in the IBM database? What specific processes or rules did you automate or enforce in the database?

2.How do you approach coding business logic within a database environment? What considerations do you take into account when deciding whether to implement logic in the database versus in the application layer?

3.Have you worked with stored procedures or triggers in the IBM database? Could you share an example of how you used these to enforce business rules or logic?

4.How do you ensure the performance and efficiency of business logic coded in the database? Are there specific techniques or optimizations you use?

5.Can you explain how you would design a system where the business logic resides primarily within the IBM database? What challenges might arise from this approach?

6.Can you walk me through the process of creating a complex DB2 stored procedure that interacts with multiple tables? How do you manage transactions and ensure consistency?

7.In DB2, how do you handle error management within stored procedures? Can you give an example where you used SQLCODE or SQLSTATE to capture and handle errors?

8.How do you optimize the performance of DB2 stored procedures, especially when dealing with large datasets? Have you used techniques like cursors, batch processing, or query optimization in your stored procedures?

9.Can you explain the differences between the various types of cursors in DB2 (e.g., static, dynamic, and result set cursors)? When would you choose one over the other?

10.How do you implement complex business logic in a DB2 stored procedure that requires looping through large datasets or handling conditional logic across multiple steps?

11.What is your experience with using DB2's stored procedure parameterization? How do you handle input, output, and input/output parameters in your procedures?
